Founded in 2004, Putah Creek Winery is Davis' very own boutique winery releasing Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Barbera, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Tannat. Putah, according to California Place Names (Gudde, 1949), means “grassy creek” in native Miwok. Originating high in the Coastal Range and flowing to the east, Putah Creek has deposited an alluvial plain of high quality deep soils of the type the Davis area is famous for.
Putah Creek commonly overtopped its banks in the days of pre-agricultural development, contributing to the deep, world-class soils that the Davis area is known for. “Davisville”, as the town was then called, made efforts to divert the creek away from the city in the late 1800's, essentially drying up the “north fork”, which is now central to the University of California Davis Arboretum, and is a beautiful backdrop to our winery, with abundant flora and fauna including rabbits, raccoons, squirrels, possums, fox, snakes, and a variety of birds.
In 2013, Italian viticulturist and winemaker Diego Barison acquired Putah Creek Winery from his friend Gene Glaeser. Hisintention is to keep the Glaeser’s legacy in making quality wines from Davis grown grapes and to share it with the local community. Our grapes are hand-crafted into award winning wines that showcase the region, receiving gold, silver and best of class awards from the San Francisco Chronicle and California State Fair Wine Competitions. In 2014, the winery opened the first tasting room in Downtown Davis, and expanded their tasting room to the Old Sugar Mill in Clarksburg in 2018.
